Embracing the Chaos - Family Session with the Jackson Four

Each summer the Jackson family travels from Hong Kong to visit their family in New England, which is where I get to see them at our annual family session. This was the 4th year that I’ve worked with them, and I’ve come to expect that each session will be a wildly different adventure than the last.

When we first met, they had two children and Joy was pregnant with her third baby, Oliver. At last year’s session, Oliver had turned 2 years old and Joy was pregnant with another baby boy!

At this session, Evander had just turned one and we celebrated with a fun cake smash at their Airbnb in Northampton. Evander was not a fan of being messy but we photographed it anyway because he was still cute when he was sad and covered in frosting. Don’t believe me? Click here to see the pictures and decide for yourself.

See? Told ya. Pretty cute.

Then WE ALL got cleaned up and headed out to Child’s Park in Northampton for some family photos. Evander was much happier in this field of flowers than he was in the cake moment.

One thing that I admire so much about this family is how willing they are to embrace the madness that comes with having 4 kids - a madness that people like me in the 2-kid club will likely never have to experience at such an intensity. There is running and climbing, waiting, rushing, boo-boos, boogies, wrestling matches, outfit changes, and of course there are many tears and emotions to be dealt with as well.

Chris and Joy’s ability to just roll with all of it certainly defines their family and I think it really shows in their photos. This is real life with 4 kids. They will want to remember all of it, even the hard stuff, because there is an odd charm in the not so good moments too.

I love the tradition of photographing this wild bunch and I can’t wait to see them again next year! Safe travels Jackson 4!

Happy Birthday Evander! Photos from his Fourth of July Cake Smash

Evander turned 1 on the fourth of July so we celebrated with a cake smash!

Joelene from Theme Cakes by Joelene made him a vanilla cake with red, white and blue frosting.

It was delicious.

Sadly, little Evander was not a fan of the photoshoot.

He got pretty upset.

The Almeida Family - Family Photo Session at Fountain Park in Wilbraham, Massachusetts

Chris and Jennifer booked me for a family photo session at Fountain Park in Wilbraham, Massachusetts this spring to capture their new family. Since becoming a family of four they have been so busy that they haven’t had a chance to have photos taken. I was so excited that they reached out to me for their first official photos!

Before they booked this session with me I had only driven by Fountain park and never stopped to explore the space. It was a really fun location for photos with a ton of variety. There are some really neat structures to explore and a big red barn that can be reserved for weddings and private functions.

We had so much fun running around the fields and picking daffodils. Summer and Lincoln are the cutest little kiddos ever and I could have spent the whole day exploring with them!

Chris and Jennifer, thanks so much for choosing me to capture your fun family! I can’t wait for the next session!

Newborn Lifestyle Session in Ludlow, MA - Charlie

massachusetts family photographer-14.jpg

Last month I had the privilege of photographing this little peanut for a newborn session at home with his parents, Christina and Travis. Christina was given a gift certificate for this session at her shower over the winter and I’ve been so excited to meet all of them!

Charlie’s name was inspired by a trip that Christina and Travis had taken to Boston after staying at the historic Omni Hotel, which is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Charles Dickens. It also happens to be a common name on Travis’ side of the family.

Travis is Native American and he and Christina wanted to include some elements of that history into this session. We played with many of the dream catchers they had decorating the walls of their home. Turns out they make great mobiles!

Charlie was the squishiest, most snuggly baby and oddly had a lot of personality for being so new to the world. He’d already earned many nicknames from his parents including, my favorite, “Charlie-bones”. Apparently he really enjoyed the newest Bone Thugs documentary on Netflix.

Savannah - Spring photos at Small Ones Farm in Amherst, Massachusetts

amherst_ma_photographer-4.jpg

I photographed Savannah 4 years ago when she was only a few weeks old and every year since then I’ve been fortunate to photograph her at a session!

She was so eager to explore the apple orchard at Small Ones Farm during my Spring Mini sessions and I was happy to follow her with my camera.

I loved seeing how much she’s grown since our last session and I can’t wait to see what new things she’ll be up to next year! Here she is with her sweet mom Erika, who joined her for a few photos at the session.

Hilltown Love - Winter Couple Session in Ashfield Massachusetts

Michael and Sydney were married on June 2, 2018 at Red Gate Farm in Ashfield, Massachusetts. Over the holidays, Michael reached out to me to see if I’d be available to take some photos of the two of them at their home over the winter. They didn’t hire a photographer for their wedding and Michael wanted to surprise Sydney with a couple session for Christmas. These sessions are a great way to reconnect with your partner. I loved that they were open to that and that they were excited to throw on their wedding clothes one more time to celebrate the day.

ashfieldmassachusettswedding-2.jpg

I’ve been to Ashfield a handful of times. Once to photograph my friend’s farm and another time to camp. It’s a beautiful place for two free spirited people like Michael and Sydney to call home. They both grew up in Texas, met in college, travelled around a bit, and then decided to move to the Northeast. For kids from the south, I’d say this is a pretty raw commitment to New England life. Ashfield has no cell service, tons of farm land, dirt roads, swimming holes, and is a popular place for western mass artists and thinkers to tuck away in the woods.

I arrived at their house one Saturday morning in late March. The snow had melted in my town, but as soon as I pulled into Ashfield I noticed that old man winter was still holding on. Of course, I lost my GPS signal on the way and was driving around aimlessly for a bit. I rolled down my window at the sight of every dog walker to ask for directions like it was 1998, and still could not find their street. Finally I saw a happy couple standing at the end of a long muddy road. I pulled over and thankfully it was Michael and Sydney! They had a feeling I was lost and walked out to the main road to flag me down.

I parked my truck at the end of the road, and fearing I’d get stuck halfway down the muddy driveway, walked the rest of the way to their tiny cabin in the woods.

ashfieldmassachusettswedding-3.jpg

When I arrived I learned that Sydney had woken up with a cold and was trying desperately to ignore feeling sick for the session. We spent some time inside drinking tea and eating toast. We talked about their wedding, how they met, and the beautiful property they call home. I snapped a few photos indoors and when she built up the energy to go outside, she effortlessly threw on her wedding dress and ran out in the snow for me!

ashfieldmassachusettswedding-7.jpg
ashfieldmassachusettswedding-8.jpg

I photographed some of the details from their wedding day. Rings, handkerchiefs they used for place settings, invitations, funny notes and drawings in their guestbook, and a few polaroids from the big day. I especially loved how Sydney’s dress showed signs of the fun they had at their wedding, dancing in the barn down the road from their cabin.

I loved all of the one on one time I had with these two. They were incredibly sweet, funny, and adventurous. Being able to photograph them in their little cabin on such a beautiful winter day was an extra treat. Congrats you two! I wish you a lifetime of happiness!

All the snuggles - Fall Family Photos in Ludlow, MA

westernmassphotographer-1.jpg

Oliver and I used to work together as photographers at WEBS in Northampton, Massachusetts. In May, I left my position there to pursue freelance work and grow my photography hustle.

Oliver is an incredible photographer, husband to his super smart wife Mia, and dad to his darling Josephine. It was great working with him at WEBS, sharing stories about our growing families and learning from him every day. I really miss seeing him!

We fixed that with some pizza and a walk through the Ludlow Country Club with our cameras. Oliver, Mia and Josie, thank you for letting me capture all of your sweet love that afternoon! Let’s do it again soon!
